12 Schächtetour engl

In this short but interesting tour you will see the mines of the "corporation"Zeche Zollverein,

The 12 pits tour

founded by Franz Haniel, and gain insight into the history and context of the individual mines. In the footsteps of the miners, we see how they lived, worked and spent their little free time.

Experience how different and imaginative buildings and grounds of the old mines have been applied to a new use. Once consisting of 4 mines, was pit 6/9 torn down in 1979.

At pit 3/7/10 visitors discover the citizens and craftsmen park , including also the interactive exhibition experience field Phänomania. The Triple Z (future-center zollverein) and the artisan park on the grounds of the former spit 4/5/11 show how the old buildings, very nicely renovated, conduce to new tasks.

Next to the famous pit 12 on the grounds of the Unesco World Heritage mine is pit 1/2/8, which was the first of the 12 pits that were sunk. The coal production began in 1851 under a stone tower (the Malakoffturm), which was later replaced by a shafthead frame.

On the trail of the three mine sites, we see many miners houses and some allotments. We continue through the park Nienhausen with a beautiful forest house by a pond, to the Zollverein heap with a view to the local harness racing track and Essen-Katernberg.
